Another one bites the dust...as Grand Rapids, Michigan- based sporting goods retailer MC Sports has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and is closing all 66 stores. The company filed for chapter 11 February 14th and immediately announced total liquidation. The chain had 24 stores in Michigan, 11 in Ohio, eight in Illinois, seven is Wisconsin, five in Missouri, and four in Iowa.
A liquidation of each location is already in progress and expected to last a few weeks, or until each stores run out of merchandise. According to this article by Cleveland.com, MC Sports was originally founded as Michigan Clothiers in 1946, but changed names to MC Sports in 1962 to reflect a growing focus on selling sporting goods and apparel. MC Sports also bough competing chains in order to expand through Illinois, Morrie Mages' Sports and Browns Sporting Goods.
