Once a well known chain of supermarkets in the Chicago area in the 80's and 90's, before leaving in 2006, Cub Foods had over a dozen stores in the suburbs of the Windy City and other major Illinois markets including Peoria, Springfield, Decatur, are now all closed or converted into another store like County Market or Shop 'n Save. Now leaving the Bloomington-Normal area next month, Cub Foods now only has one store left in Illinois, located at the Northwest tip between Iowa and Wisconsin, in Freeport, Illinois.
The store announced at the start of this week, in an article published by the local news network, Pantagraph, that the Cub Foods has served the College town since 1984, and will close next month, rumored that a new Hy-vee opening earlier this year in the former K's Merchandise, has been the reason for this because of new competition.
Many stores like Kroger, Schnucks, and Meijer, and even Jewel-Osco, has been in the area for years now, and have drawn customers away from Cub, and now its finally time for them to call it quits.
Cub Foods is now only serving the Minneapolis-St. Paul area suburbs in Minnesota, and oddly enough, one store left in Illinois in Freeport.
Here are some pictures taken in March 2012, August 2012, and December 2013. I will soon have pictures of the store during the course of its closing.
