Sears And Kmart Closures Topping 150 Locations.

Sears announced another wave of store closures by this spring, topping the list to 150 stores. Sears Holdings will now close 108 Kmart's, and 42 Sears stores by April. Yesterday's announcement was added to a previous list of closures announced in late December, on considering about 30 stores of this total.

I instantly thought of the song "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2, as the song starts out with Bono singing "I can't believe the news today...". I couldn't believe the news of Kmart closing MORE stores and Macy's closing stores, all announced the same day, many of which I have shopped at for years, and love very much.

Here is my post from late December as Sears announced 28 store closures, several more added to the list before New Years.

Again, all of these stores are going to close by spring (late March/ early April), as the liquidation sales start at the end of this week. I am very certain this will not be the last list of stores set to close this year, as Sears dug a hole far too deep for any alpinist to ever climb out.

Today, Sears announced the sale of Craftsman Tools to Stanley Black & Decker for 900 million, not enough to even make a dent in Sears debt, so what does the chain have left to stand out from the rest?

With all these stores closing, the total number of stores left by this years end without an further closures is about 1,500, down 60% since 2011, when Sears operated nearly 3,500 stores.

Macy's Closing 68 Stores

     After a disappointing holiday shopping season, Macy's announced the closure of 68 out of 100 stores planned to close this year. This effort is to gain sales at better performing stores, and cut under-performing locations, and reverse lost sales during this year.

     Out of these 68 stores, three have already closed in 2016, 63 will close this spring, and two stores will close mid-year. Sales will take a hit as a result of these closures, but long term, will benefit the chain to focus on stronger performing stores and online sales.

     As phrased by the CEO Terry Lundgren, it is never an easy decision for a company to close stores period, but in recent cases, stores are chosen based on location. The stores listed before are at malls with low traffic flow, and retail centers that no longer boast a positive customer basis.
