The 1.2 million square foot mall opened in 1976, constructed by the development company Homart Development, that would eventually be taken over by Simon Property Group.

In 2006, Macy's took control of the Marshall Field's location when purchased from Federated Department Stores and May Co.
Beginning in 2011 and continuing into early 2013, Orland Square Mall went under another renovation that completely changed the image of the mall, with upgraded entrances, signs, floors, as well as lighting and expanded food court.

The Sears was always a Sears,as the mall was built by Homart (Sears) there never was a Ward's there. As of 2018, the Sears has closed and will be demolished to make a movie theater and the Carson Pirie store has been sold to Von Maur.
