Strack n Vantil Closing Several Stores in Illinois.

Not a new topic that the Chicago area is loosing for stores. A sign of the times, taxes, location may all be factors, but what not factored in is that we will have no where to shop anymore. The Chicago Tribune reported that Highland, Indiana-based Strack and Van Til announced it will be closing 5 area stores, a Strack in Merrillville, a Strack in Chicago and three Ultra Foods stores.

Here is the list of locations:

  • Strack & Van Til- 72nd and Taft Road, Merrillville, IN.
  • Strack & Van Til- Elston Avenue, Chicago, IL.
  • Ultra Foods- 75th Street, Downers Grove, IL.
  • Ultra Foods- 491 East Roosevelt Road, Lombard, IL.
  • Ultra Foods- 87th and Kedzie Avenue, Chicago, IL.
These locations are expected to close on or close to April 30th. Although these stores will close, Strack and Van Til will still operate 32 stores throughout Indiana and Illinois. Some of these stores are so close together, its not cost feasible to operate both in such close proximity. There is a store on Roosevelt in Wheaton and Roosevelt in Lombard (closing location), there is also a Mariano's a few miles from the Wheaton location, plenty of shopping still for Wheaton and a short distance from lombard to shop, although there is Jewel-Osco and Pete's Fresh Market. Well saturated is a great way to phrase the grocery shopping choices along Roosevelt Road between Wheaton and Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.

Locations like Elston in Chicago or Kedzie in Chicago may close for economic reasons, such as unprofitable, although the store sells a large quantity or merchandise, theft and demographic plays a pivotal role in a stores prosperity.

These are photos of the Downers Grove store along 75th Street. A mark down sale doesn't appear to have began, I will supply updates to this location as well as the others up to the closures.

This store and several others got the refresh with new signage and paint, and now it seems like such a waist of time and money, but what will save money for the company in the long run is closing the stores to save the others, supposedly.
