Macy's Closing 68 Stores


     After a disappointing holiday shopping season, Macy's announced the closure of 68 out of 100 stores planned to close this year. This effort is to gain sales at better performing stores, and cut under-performing locations, and reverse lost sales during this year.

     Out of these 68 stores, three have already closed in 2016, 63 will close this spring, and two stores will close mid-year. Sales will take a hit as a result of these closures, but long term, will benefit the chain to focus on stronger performing stores and online sales.

     As phrased by the CEO Terry Lundgren, it is never an easy decision for a company to close stores period, but in recent cases, stores are chosen based on location. The stores listed before are at malls with low traffic flow, and retail centers that no longer boast a positive customer basis.

Here is the list of Macy's stores scheduled to close this year provided by CNBC:

•Laurel Plaza, North Hollywood, CA (475,000 square feet; opened in 1995; 105 associates); 

•Ala Moana Jewel Gallery, Honolulu, HI (2,000 square feet; opened in 1986; 9 associates); 

•Valley Fair, West Valley City, UT (106,000 square feet; opened in 1970; 53 associates);

Macy's already announced year-end 2016 closings

Final clearance sales at the following Macy's stores closing in early 2017 will begin on Monday, January 9, and run for approximately eight to 12 weeks (with the exception of Lancaster Mall*, where final clearance sales are already in progress):

•Union Square Men's, San Francisco, CA (248,000 square feet: opened in 1974) 256 associates; as previously announced); 

•Tyson's Galleria, McLean, VA (265,000 square feet; opened in 1988; 122 associates; as previously announced 

      The total of associates eliminated after all these stores close could surpass 10,000, although many could placed in different stores of apply for a different position at another Macy's in the area, although some don't have that option.
