Canadian Retail Giants That Are No More...

Lets face it, America, where the land is divided into states, not Providences has had its share of chains going out of business, going bankrupt, and liquidating, but we have had ten times as many chains go under, and bought from other companies than Canada has ever had. Some of the most memorable is Woolworth, and Montgomery Ward, which either were never in Canada, except Woolworth owned Woolco, which pulled out in nearly 10 years after leaving leaving american soil. The ageing populous of Canada has memories of shopping with there parents as children at Eaton's and Tower's as I would at Marshall Field's in Chicago or my dad at Hudson's in Detroit.

Here are several chains known in Canada that no longer exist, from either liquidating, being bough by another company, or leaving Canada in favor of staying in there home country.( These are not in any order based on information, this is just how I uploaded the pictures and are organized numerically).

1.)

Zellers

Liquidated: 2013

Fate: Bought by Target Corp. or America and purchased, all remaining store bought by Wal-Mart or left empty.

2.) 

Towers

Closed in 1991

Fate: Purchased by Zellers

3.)
Kmart
Sold off to some investors in 1997 after poor sales
Fate: Sold to Hudson Bay Corp. in 1997 and converted stores to Zellers, and about 40 remained closed.

4.)
Simpson-Sears
Defunct in 1989, and entirely in 1991.
Fate: Bought by Hudson Bay and split off from Sears, creating Sears Canada

One of my personal favorites...

5.)
Eaton's
Filed for bankruptcy
Fate: Assets were purchased by Sears Canada in 1999 and converted all stores to Sears and remaining closed by 2002.

Target
Liquidation sales began in January 2015
Fate: American operations chose to come to Canada and buy all the Zellers stores in 2011 through 2013, close all of them and convert to Target, the rest were purchased by Wal-Mart, the rest remained closed.

Now over a later of operations, karma came and came hard, were an American brand came and took Canadian tradition away, and Canada fought back and got Target out of there land.

(I am not on anyones side, but that seems pretty accurate to me!).

The Bay
Now known as Hudson Bay again
Changed back to original name in 2013

Woolco
Liquidated
Fate: Parent company Woolworth out of New York closed all remaining stores in Canada, and three years later Liquidated all American Woolworth stores.

9.)
Jones New York
Liquidation
Fate: Began to close stores in early 2015 and will all be gone by the end of the year.

Successors 

The brands that seem they will never have a problem with business in Canada, they seem to have to much business, or the respect of Canadian shoppers to ever worry about closing or going out of business.
